Covid in Belgium

Belgium during pandemic

In March 2020, the world as we know it came to a standstill because of the covid pandemic. Regardless of what you think about the pandemic (real or fake), one thing is certain. Nothing will be as it was before March 2020. Remote offices will become the norm, people will unknowingly limit their social contact, and strict sanitation regimes are here to stay for a long time.

A few weeks ago in my area it became mandatory to wear a face mask in public places. So basically anything outside my own garden qualifies. So I decided to go to the region’s capital to see what it looks like. Do people follow the regime or not? It turns out that they really do….

I have to admit, it looks very strange. All those people with mouth caps. A little scary even. People waiting in lines maintaining their social distance, no one seems to be arguing with the system. Even children and the elderly had their faces covered. Spooky.

I knew I would encounter many people with face masks, but the impression it made on me was a bit overwhelming. I must admit that just walking through the city already made me feel uncomfortable.

I really hope this will end soon and we can go back to normal life, where I can shake hands as a welcoming gesture instead of doing an “elbow”.

Stay safe and follow the WHO recommendations.
